Black rapeseed is a versatile seed from the Brassica napus plant used in various applications, primarily for oil production, animal feed, bird food, and fishing bait. It is known for its high oil and nutrient content.
In South Africa, “black rapeseed” is a growing crop, particularly in the Western Cape, where it is known as canola. Since its introduction in the late 1990s, production has increased significantly due to a rising demand for vegetable oil and high-protein animal feed. The Western Cape provides the ideal cool, winter growing conditions, though it is also farmed on a smaller scale in other provinces. In addition to oil, the seed is used as a nutritious supplement for animal feed, and the entire plant can be grazed or used as forage. Locally, black rapeseed can be purchased for smaller applications like carp fishing bait and birdseed mixes.
Forage rape can be sown from spring to autumn. The species provides a very palatable, high yielding, protein rich forage option. It can be grazed, used in cut-and-carry systems, or made into hay or silage.
